Those things probably are contributing. But there's another factor that rarely comes up: how much water you've had today.
Dehydration and back pain have a real connection, and it's one that matters more the longer you spend sitting at a desk.
What's Actually Inside Your Spinal Discs
Your spine is a stack of vertebrae separated by intervertebral discs — soft, flexible pads that absorb shock, distribute load, and let you bend and twist without grinding bone against bone.
The inside of each disc, called the nucleus pulposus, is mostly water. A healthy disc is firm and gel-like, pressing outward against its outer casing (the annulus fibrosus) and creating a kind of hydraulic cushion under the weight of your body.
This hydration isn't static. Throughout the day, as gravity compresses your spine, fluid slowly seeps out of your discs into surrounding tissue. While you sleep lying down, the pressure releases and the discs reabsorb fluid. This is why you're measurably taller in the morning than at night.
The system works well when you're adequately hydrated. When you're not, there's less fluid available for the discs to draw on — both in terms of the fluid surrounding the disc and, over time, inside the disc itself.
What Dehydration Does to Your Discs
Research suggests that chronic underhydration accelerates disc degeneration. Studies indicate that dehydrated discs become thinner, less elastic, and less effective at distributing compressive load. A disc that can't do its job evenly puts more stress on the surrounding structures: the vertebrae themselves, the facet joints, and the muscles that run along either side of your spine.

The Muscle Side of the Equation
It's not just the discs. Muscle cramps and muscle fatigue are classic symptoms of dehydration. The muscles along your spine — the erector spinae group, the multifidus, the quadratus lumborum — are doing continuous postural work while you sit. They're the reason your back doesn't just collapse forward.

- Don't rely on coffee alone. Coffee is a mild diuretic. It contributes to your fluid intake, but not as efficiently as water, and it's easy to rely on it without drinking actual water.
