Does Dehydration Affect Your Skin? What the Research Actually Shows
"Drink more water for glowing skin" is the kind of advice that costs nothing to give and almost never gets questioned. The actual research tells a more complicated — and more useful — story.
Dehydration does affect your skin. But drinking extra water beyond what your body needs? The evidence for that is surprisingly thin.
What Dehydration Actually Does to Your Skin
When your body is meaningfully dehydrated, one of the first visible signs shows up in your skin. It loses turgor — that slight plumpness and elasticity that makes skin bounce back quickly when pressed or pinched. Clinicians have used the skin pinch test for decades as a bedside sign of dehydration: pinch the skin on the back of the hand or forearm, release it, and watch how fast it snaps back. Slow recoil suggests dehydration.
The problem is that this test is more useful as a rough check than a precise measure. A systematic review by Goehring and colleagues (2022) examined 13 studies and found that while the skin pinch test is the most commonly used bedside assessment for dehydration, it is not a reliable standalone diagnostic tool in adults. Inter-rater reliability is moderate at best — meaning two clinicians performing the same test on the same patient often reach different conclusions.
A review by Fayomi, Maconochie, and Body (2007) similarly found only moderate agreement between observers assessing skin turgor in children, with kappa values in the 0.4–0.55 range. Skin turgor is a useful signal, but not a precise one — and that cuts both ways. It means the pinch test isn't definitive proof of dehydration, and it also means the visible skin changes you see when you're dehydrated can be subtle and easy to misattribute.
What is clear: when dehydration is genuine and significant, skin looks dull, feels dry to the touch, and has reduced elasticity. Fix the dehydration and those signs resolve — not because water "plumps" skin from the inside out, but because the body restores normal fluid balance.
The "Drink More Water for Better Skin" Claim, Examined
Here's where the popular advice diverges from the evidence. Most "drink water for glowing skin" content conflates two very different situations: correcting dehydration, and drinking extra water on top of adequate hydration.
A randomized controlled trial by Seol and colleagues (2024) tested this directly. Forty-three healthy women were assigned to either add an extra 2 liters of water to their daily intake or use a topical moisturizer three times daily. The result: extra water intake produced minimal measurable skin hydration benefit at most body sites. Topical moisturizer, by contrast, produced significantly greater stratum corneum hydration.
If you're already adequately hydrated, drinking more water doesn't meaningfully improve your skin barrier function. Your kidneys excrete the excess. The skin hydration that matters happens at the level of the stratum corneum — the outermost skin layer — and that's governed far more by what you put on your skin and the environment around you than by how much you drink.
The Bigger Picture: What Actually Drives Skin Hydration
Water intake is one minor lever in a system with many more influential controls. A narrative review by Camilion, Khanna, Mayrovitz, and colleagues (2022) documented the range of factors that shape skin hydration independently of oral water intake:
- UV exposure degrades the skin barrier and depletes natural moisturizing factors
- Cold weather and low humidity strip ceramides from the stratum corneum, reducing its ability to retain water
- Circadian CLOCK-gene regulation of aquaporin-3 (a water channel protein in skin cells) affects hydration across the day regardless of how much you drink
- Dietary fatty acids influence lipid composition of the skin barrier
- Aging progressively reduces natural moisturizing factor production and sebum output
None of these respond meaningfully to drinking an extra glass of water. Sunscreen, moisturizer, diet, and sleep do more for your skin day-to-day than any amount of extra water once you're already adequately hydrated.
How Much Is "Adequate"?

So Does Drinking Water Help Your Skin or Not?
The honest answer is: it depends on where you're starting from.
If you're chronically dehydrated — common among people who sit at a desk and forget to drink for hours — getting to adequate hydration will noticeably improve your skin's appearance and elasticity. That change is real and visible. The skin pinch test may be imprecise, but the underlying physiology is not: dehydrated skin looks and feels worse.
If you're already drinking enough and you're hoping that an extra liter a day will transform your complexion, the RCT evidence says: probably not. Moisturizer will do more for your stratum corneum than extra water. Consistent sunscreen use will do more for your skin's long-term quality than either.
The useful takeaway is not "don't bother drinking water" — it's that adequate hydration matters, and going beyond adequate has diminishing returns for skin specifically. You can't drink your way to better skin if the problem is barrier damage, UV exposure, or a product gap.
The Skin Pinch Test: A Useful but Limited Self-Check
If you want a quick gut-check for whether you might be running low on fluids, the skin pinch test is a reasonable rough signal. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand for two seconds and release it. It should snap back immediately. If it takes a second or two to flatten, that's a sign — not a diagnosis — that you may be dehydrated.
Combined with other cues (dark urine, dry mouth, fatigue, difficulty concentrating), it's useful context. On its own, the research is clear that it's not definitive.
The Bottom Line
Dehydration does affect your skin — it reduces turgor, elasticity, and moisture. But drinking beyond adequate hydration has limited benefit for skin in healthy people, and topical moisturizer outperforms extra water intake for stratum corneum hydration in direct comparisons. The most important skin factors — UV protection, barrier health, and sleep — aren't solved at the tap.
